It’s hard to make longtime franchise sales rep Greg Tanner speechless, but MFV Exposition President/CEO Tom Portesy managed it. MFV, organizers of franchise trade shows, threw a surprise party at the International Franchise Expo’s exhibitors’ party to celebrate Tanner’s retirement from Aaron’s.

Invited guests toasted Tanner’s long career, as Portesy awarded him with a plaque noting his varied accomplishments to franchising. The Wall Street Journal also paid tribute.

Franchise Times got into the action by presenting Tanner with his own Franchise Times cover, complete with fake cover lines. Our favorite: “Exposé: Tanner admits to years of faking Southern charm. ‘I’m really a Yankee.’”

It’s hard to say good-by to some people, and Tanner especially, because he’s not going away. The affable sales guru is starting his own consulting company, Tanner Franchise Group, with Dave Kelley, a marketing and advertising executive.

His second wind is not only because he feels he still has a lot to give back to franchising, but because as he says, “My wife said she married me for better or worse, but not for lunch every day.”

His first full day at home, he quipped, his wife looked up from her newspaper at the breakfast table and said, “Are you still here?”

For more than 40 years, Tanner, who has been nominated to the International Franchise Association Hall of Fame, has exclusively served the franchise industry as a senior-level corporate executive, franchisor, franchisee, development manager and Tanner Franchise Group consulting partner. He is known for his great depth of wisdom and on-point advice in franchising, some of which he has compiled in his book called TANNERISMS. Tanner, who in 2012 was named a Top 20 person to watch by Franchise Times magazine, retired from Aaron’s on July 1, 2014, where he awarded more than 900 franchises.
